About
Caroline Ficken
“Storyteller” has become a commonly used word that creatives and marketers identify with because of the vast opportunities the digital world has to offer. I’ve always considered myself a storyteller. So much so that I went on to receive my Bachelor of Arts in Theatre. I immersed myself into classical and contemporary pieces dissecting convoluted women that invigorated and notably challenged my undergraduate experience. Whether filming sketches with childhood friends, writing for my high school newspaper, or starting a newsletter to creatively inspire the women in my life, I have always had an overwhelming desire to enlighten, entertain, and engage.
While obtaining my degree in Theatre with a minor in Telecommunications & Film, I documented the creative process behind the department’s theatrical productions for their marketing use. I detailed the strenuous work behind the costumes, the incorporation of jazz into Twelfth Night, and the nuance stemmed from a single dance move. I also had the pleasure of directing three narrative short films that circled southeastern film festivals and received a few awards. I graduated Magna Cum Laude in May of 2018, eager and apprehensive to combat the next chapter of my own story and the unpredictable life of a performer.
The year following graduation, I worked at a haberdashery. I spent my days memorizing monologues and writing cover letters to theatrical agents in between folding shirts and scheduling custom clothing appointments. Run by a husband and wife in a charming, historical town, this cherished Mom-and-Pop boutique held a unique story of its own. During my time there, I saw a dire need to assist in the business’ online presence as it was lacking the individuality and exclusive elegance it offered in-store. I developed a modest social media strategy then compiled a small portfolio featuring the merchandise and showcasing my own product styling and photography. I presented it to my boss and his wife, emphasizing the importance of visual consistency, high-quality branding, and engaging with the community. I wanted to accentuate the treasure that is this store. Having grown up in the age of corporations and the latter years of shopping malls, I found the revitalization of local living to be empowering and worth sharing. They decided to hire me, and I went on to build the store a clean, reflective website and a consistent online identity.
I approached a few small business owners in the community and was offered a job for an online marketplace that connects local property owners with the entertainment industry, providing onsite filming locations and short-term housing. Still on the road to performance, I was anxious to be part of the strengthening film community in Atlanta. I devised another strategy spotlighting the importance of marketing toward film productions, incorporating consistent email campaigns, and renovating professional online platforms. From there, I acquired the role of Media Marketing Manager.
Having a Master of Arts in Writing & Digital Communication in addition to a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre with a minor in Telecommunications & Film, I have intimately and uniquely studied storytelling. The 21st century has been one of rapid online innovation and connection, altering the methods in which we create and consume stories. We have the unfathomable capability of sharing information across the globe and establishing like-minded communities without meeting face-to-face. The COVID-19 pandemic catapulted life with technology even further, and with its persistent advancements, we need honest digital storytelling now more than ever.
My goal is to join action with creativity by utilizing online platforms to tell real and exceptional stories. I am passionate about gathering information and communicating it in the most efficient and effective way possible seeking to capture an audience, confront perspectives, and grow as a community. We have the opportunity and the responsibility to witness, challenge, and transform. I intend to become a part of the new era of storytelling, and with the hope to implement integrity and compose a more equitable future.
